On September 27th, the fifth edition of the [**Design Fair**](https://nieuweinstituut.nl/events/design-fair-2026) will take place at Het Nieuwe Instituut. Curated by none other than former HIG member and design journalist Joline van den Oever, this time the fair is completely dedicated to circular, regenerative, and sustainable design.

In addition to being a bustling workplace, Het Industriegebouw is also a national heritage site where art and design are highly valued. That is why we highly recommend the Design Fair taking place in our hometown this month. Under the arcade of Het Nieuwe Instituut, a cozy outdoor market will unfold on Sunday, September 27th, where both young talents and established names will present their craft directly to the public. An extra nice touch is that the selection is very diverse; not only can you find valuable, unique pieces, but also cool items for smaller budgets.

## **Circular and sustainable**

Under the inspiring eye of (design) journalist Joline van den Oever, the fifth edition of the fair has been given the theme 'circular, regenerative, and sustainable design'. For instance, you will find a maker extracting textile dye from seaweed, a designer coloring aluminum furniture with plant-based pigments, a designer transforming old wine bottles into tableware, and various creatives making their products from residual flows from thrift stores or the waste industry. Joline says: "Pioneering designers and makers play an educational role during the event by creating more awareness around sustainable production and reuse. Visitors, in turn, have the opportunity to support them and bring home a local product with a meaningful story."

### **Action and education**

Besides a market, the Design Fair is also a platform for action, exchange, and education. For example, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, you can participate in one of the workshops, have broken items fixed in the repair lab, and discover how designers develop new materials or create regenerative systems.
